SplashCast from SplashCast Media is one of the coolest rich media tools around, and it’s pretty easy to use. You can create a slideshow that contains documents, images or videos. You can either upload content for each “slide”, or to make life easy, use their search feature or the preconfigured Flickr or YouTube conduits. It’s really quite an amazing tool – maybe a bit intimidating at first, but once you get used to, you might just get addicted like I have.

Now why would you want to create your music video channel? Well, amongst other reasons, here are a few:

1. Are you in a band and have an official website? Have some photos and/or music videos from a recent tour? Make it easy for fans to view by creating a slideshow that combines photos and videos.
2. Fan sites can devote a SplashCast channel to the band they like, or even mix things up with a few bands.
3. You simply want to create some music video content to embed on your blog.

SplashCast images from Flickr (and videos from YouTube) can be added piecemeal using different keywords to search for content. From the search results, you can theck check mark the items you want to include.

Or if you want a channel that constantly updates, you can specify an RSS feed URL for either one of Flickr or YouTube. At the time of this writing, you cannot specify multiple feeds. So if you want to mix pics and videos, you have to skip using feeds.

Be warned that it’s long, but I haven’t gone into a lot of detail because there are some excellent “how to” examples right on the SplashCast Media home page. (Look for the player at top left, click the Start button, then click the Channel Guide to see what tutorials they have, or wait until the first video finishes playing – the list will display automatically.) Note that the how-to SplashCast below is on auto-advance between frames. If you don’t want to watch an entire frame, you can manually advance. Or you can scroll down this page to see the finished Pearl Jam SplashCast, at the bottom of this post.

Using the HTML code from the last step, embed into the blog page (or Myspace or wherever), save, and you’re done. If you have a lot of pics or videos or both, it may take a while for the player to initialize before you can use it. But once initialized, it should come up faster the next time, depending on the load on SplashCast Media’s servers.

Pearl Jam SplashCast:
Here is a example using pics from Flickr and videos from YouTube to create a SplashCast for Pearl Jam. (I chose them because Eddie Vedder has one of the most passionate voices in the history of rock, and I never tire of hearing him, even when I don’t understand what the heck he’s saying. They also love their fans, too often a rarity in music.) Note that this example SplashCast is on auto-advance, though you can also manually advance through it.
