In a significant move to enhance user security, Google Play has announced the implementation of verification badges for Virtual Private Network (VPN) applications that prioritize user privacy and safety. This initiative aims to guide users toward trustworthy VPN services amidst a surge in demand for secure internet connections.

Criteria for Verification

To qualify for the new verification badge, VPN apps must meet specific standards outlined by Google:

  • Security Assessment: Completion of a Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) Level 2 validation, which evaluates the app’s security measures.
  • User Base and Feedback: A minimum of 10,000 installs and at least 250 user reviews.
  • Market Presence: Availability on Google Play for a minimum of 90 days.
  • Data Transparency: Clear disclosure of user data collection practices.
  • Independent Reviews: Agreement to undergo independent security evaluations.

While other factors contribute to the evaluation, meeting these requirements significantly increases a VPN app’s chances of receiving the verified badge.

Current Verified VPNs

As of now, prominent VPN services such as NordVPN, hide.me, and Aloha have already received the verification badge, signaling their adherence to Google’s stringent privacy and security standards.

Addressing Rising VPN Usage

This update comes at a time when many users are turning to VPNs to access restricted applications, such as TikTok, which remains unavailable on Google Play and Apple’s App Store. The verification badge aims to assist users in selecting secure VPN options amidst a plethora of available services.

Enhancing Transparency and Security

This measure is part of Google’s broader efforts to enhance transparency and security on the Play Store. It builds upon previous initiatives, such as the introduction of privacy labels and the promotion of independent security reviews, to ensure a safer user experience.

By implementing these verification badges, Google Play is taking a proactive step in promoting user safety and encouraging VPN providers to uphold high standards of privacy and security.
