Researching a hair transplant online can feel overwhelming: hundreds of clinics, before-and-after photos of every quality, and prices that range several times over. A simple step-by-step plan helps you move from searching to a decision you are comfortable with.
Step 1: Understand your hair loss
Most hair loss in men is androgenetic alopecia, where hair thins at the temples and crown in a predictable pattern. In women, thinning is often more diffuse. Before surgery, a doctor should confirm the cause, because some types of hair loss, such as those linked to thyroid problems, iron deficiency or stress, are treated without a transplant.
Step 2: Learn the two main methods
In FUE, the surgeon removes individual follicles from the back of the head and places them into small channels in the thinning area. In DHI, the follicles are implanted with a pen-like tool that opens the skin and places the graft in one movement. FUE suits larger areas; DHI gives fine control at the hairline. Many clinics combine both.
Step 3: Check your donor area
The number of grafts you can move depends on the density of the donor zone at the back and sides of the head. A careful clinic measures it and explains how many grafts can be taken without leaving that area visibly thin. If a clinic promises very large numbers without examining you, treat it as a warning sign.
Step 4: Compare clinics properly
Look at photos of patients with a similar hair type and degree of loss, taken at least 12 months after surgery. Ask who performs each part of the procedure: the surgeon, or technicians. Ask whether the price is fixed per session or per graft and what it includes. Clinics that publish methods and prices openly, such as City Medical Centre, make this step faster.
Step 5: Prepare for the day
About two weeks before surgery, blood thinners such as aspirin are usually stopped, and alcohol and smoking are reduced. Wear a shirt that buttons at the front. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and normally takes most of a day.
Step 6: Plan the first year
Small scabs fall off within ten days. The transplanted hair usually sheds in the first month, which is expected. New growth starts at three to four months, and the final result is visible at about a year. Medical treatment is often recommended to protect the hair you still have.
Step 7: Look after the result
Avoid direct sun, saunas and contact sports for about a month. Follow the washing instructions from the clinic exactly, especially in the first week, and attend the check-ups so the doctor can track how the new hair is growing.
A short checklist
- Cause of hair loss confirmed by a doctor
- Method and number of grafts explained with reasons
- Real results at 12 months reviewed
- Full price and what it includes in writing
Following these steps does not guarantee a perfect outcome, but it greatly reduces the chance of an unpleasant surprise.
