Jojo Linder of Kompotoi tells us about being inspired by the natural toilet with charm.
First of all, how are you and your family doing?
Jojo Linder: We are all very well and looking forward to a nice spring.
Tell us about you, your career, and how you founded Kompotoi.
Jojo Linder: Yes, let’s start in my youth. My only thing in life was freestyle sports like skateboarding and snowboarding. I went every weekend to an event and had a perfect time with like-minded people worldwide.
At one point, I was also organizing a skateboarding event series in Switzerland and had a terrible accident. After that, I could not ride like before. So I started to think about doing something else in life. First, I began to help out at a foundation with development aid. So I learned that there are no toilets in many countries, and this is a health problem. And in our society, the toilets are an environmental problem. So after I had seen some very good composting toilet solutions, I came up with the idea to do composting toilets as a rental Service.
For the first 4 years, we were organized as an association and were really developing in the field. In 2016 my partner and I founded the company.
How does Kompotoi market its product/services online?
Jojo Linder: Actually, our product is very well visible. After the first events, the request just came in over our homepage.
We are also part of some renting platforms, which can be very helpful.
And for sure, we have a lot of media coverage. It’s just an interesting thematic.
How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how did you get through it?
Jojo Linder: Uhh, the first months were just crazy. In autumn, we prepared ourselves for very strong growth, and then in spring, the phone was just ringing from already booked events that needed to cancel their order.
It was really hard to have a positive perspective, but we were very lucky. Many tourist areas requested us to provide them with toilets in the summertime, so we at least had some bookings at the end of the year.
What specific tools, software, and management skills are you using to manage your online marketing?
Jojo Linder: As I told you before, we are not doing much advertising. What we do is to ensure that our SEO is good and is linked to these renting platforms.
Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?
Jojo Linder: The main competitors are the chemical plastic toilets. They have a huge network and can provide their product for a very good price.
We really stand out from that is, not just with our design. We also recycle the material we collect, and this makes us much more environmentally friendly. Let’s be honest. No one likes the classic plastic toilets.
